Starting BattyBuilt

Hello, My name is Rob Bloom – thanks for visiting BattyBuilt.com.

BattyBuilt got started following the completion of a custom “activity” table for my kids.

I decided to build the table after searching high and low online and in stores for a table that would fit the dimensions, aesthetics and quality that my wife and I were looking for – I repeatedly came up empty-handed. So rather than settling for something we really didn’t want or purchasing a custom-built table from a pricey store, I decided to save myself hundreds of dollars by doing it myself.

Now, I didn’t exactly start it from scratch. My friend and BattyBuilt Co-Founder, Matt Nesser had built a very similar table for his own kids. So after a few months of admiring his work, I set out to build my own. I’ll get Matt to send me some pictures of his table so you can see the similarities and differences. For example, his table top is is stained darker than mine and treated to a high-gloss piano-like finish. Careful with those scissors, kids.

I was so pleased with the outcome of the table and grateful that Matt had provided me with the idea in the first place, that I decided to approach Matt with the idea of combining our creativity and talents and start a business – more an that in a moment.

The table – as you can see – turned out great (see below for more photos.)

Features of the table include:

    • Interior storage: Plenty of space inside for art supplies, games, toys, etc.
    • Kid-friendly: The twin table tops will never slam shut on little fingers. Both are equipped with safety hinges which allow them to stay open in any position. Table height is comfortable for children and provides perfect clearance below for chairs.
    • Clean, modern design: Multiple coats of white paint mix well with natural wood grain. The legs are sleek yet super strong. No hardware is visible on the table’s exterior.
    • Solid construction and finish: Table body and legs are constructed with poplar hard wood and the tops are cut from a sheet of red oak veneer plywood. The table top has many protective coats of polyurethane, which bring out the beautiful wood grain and protect it from nicks and scratches.
    • Lightweight: The table weighs in at just 50 lbs, so it’s easy to move around.

What’s in a name?

The table isn’t the only thing we’ve built. And just like all other ambitious projects, the table was met with the same reaction from my loving, yet skeptical wife. Her typical reaction: “You’re crazy.” Hence, BattyBuilt was born. Of course I don’t think I’m crazy or “batty.”

But how did we get into custom radiator covers? Simple … just like any project Matt and I get into, it was based on need.

Matt lives in an older home that has unsightly, paint-peeling steam radiators in every room – and he has three kids. So obviously he wanted to protect his kids from burns, while making each room more attractive. So he created some of the original custom radiator cover designs that BattyBuilt offers to our customers today. From that point it was clear that there was a need in older homes for custom radiator covers to hide old, unattractive radiators, improve heating efficiency and protect young kids from potentially nasty burns.

What to expect from our BattyBlog

BattyBuilt specializes in custom radiator covers but we have more to share. So, from time to time we’ll write about our ideas and other things we create. And keep in mind that everything we highlight on the BattyBlog is also available for purchase on a commission basis.

Thanks for your interest,

Co-Founder, BattyBuilt
